13th: The golden goose

There was a man who had three sons. The youngest of whom was called Dummling and was looked down  on by everyone.
One day, the eldest received a cake and a bottle of wine, and went to the forest to cut wood. When he entered the forest he met a little grey-haired old man. He asked the eldest to give him a piece of cake and a draught of his wine. But the clever son rejected the request. He left the man standing and went on. But when he began to cut down a tree, he made a false stroke, and the axe cut his arm. He had to go home. This happening was the little grey man's doing.
After this, the second son also received a cake and a bottle of wine, and went into the forest. He met the little gray man likewise, be asked the same thing by the man, and he rejected it. Then, he got injured and be carried home.
Then, Dummling begged his father for letting him go to the forrest. He also met the man, and asked to give him a cake and a drink. Dummling gave him them and ate together. The man was grateful to him for his kindness. Then the man told him there would be something good at the root of an old tree which he would cut down.
After the man leaving, Dummling went and cut down the tree. He found a goose sitting in the roots with feathers of pure gold. He took her up, and taking her with him, went to an inn where he thou he would stay the night. The host's daughters saw the goose and thought they wanted to get one of its golden feathers...

After that, Dummling with a golden goose got some troubles, but he became happy in the end.
